Philippines Warns of Escalation After China Blocks Sailor’s Evacuation

by admin477351

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has issued a warning regarding potential escalation in the West Philippine Sea following reports that Chinese personnel obstructed the medical evacuation of a sick Filipino sailor. This incident took place at Ayungin Shoal, where the BRP Sierra Madre, a grounded Philippine Navy vessel, is stationed. Marcos expressed deep concern over the event, questioning the rationale behind preventing urgent medical assistance to Filipino personnel.

Marcos highlighted that this obstruction could indicate a shift in China’s tactics concerning the disputed waters. He noted that China has increasingly imposed requirements for permission to conduct operations in the area, a stance that Manila does not recognize. Speaking from Singapore, the president reiterated the Philippines’ position on exercising its rights over what it considers its territorial waters.

The incident is expected to be a point of discussion in talks with Beijing and may influence ongoing negotiations over a Code of Conduct for the South China Sea. Marcos pointed out that similar operations in the disputed waters had previously faced fewer demands for permission, suggesting a recent increase in restrictions and tensions.

In response to the escalating maritime tensions, the Philippines has sought support from allies and regional partners. Marcos emphasized the vulnerability of Filipino fishermen and Coast Guard personnel in the West Philippine Sea, acknowledging that safety concerns sometimes necessitate the withdrawal of Philippine personnel from operations.

This development adds another layer to the ongoing maritime disputes between Manila and Beijing. The Philippines remains firm in defending its rights to access, resupply operations, and ensuring the safety of its personnel in the contested waters.
