At the 40th anniversary celebration of the Young People’s Action Party (PAP), Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong called on the nation’s youth to bring their diverse backgrounds and fresh perspectives to the ruling party. Wong emphasized the importance of diversity of thought for the party’s renewal and its ability to tackle future challenges effectively. He invited individuals who are invested in Singapore’s future to engage with the party, even if they hold differing views on certain issues.
Addressing the perception that the PAP, as an established political entity, no longer requires new members, Wong countered that Singapore continues to be a “global underdog.” He highlighted the need for each generation to contribute new leadership and innovative ideas to maintain the nation’s competitive edge. Wong’s remarks aimed to dispel any notion that the party is closed to fresh talent and new ways of thinking.
Wong also discussed the party’s stance on political engagement, warning against the dangers of divisive and confrontational politics. He asserted that the PAP is committed to resolving issues through collaboration, practical solutions, and consensus-building rather than inciting public discord or political polarization. His comments underscored the party’s preference for unity and cooperative problem-solving as a means to address national concerns.
The event also served as the launching pad for the Young PAP Academy, a new initiative designed to provide leadership training and mentorship to youth activists. In addition, the YP 40 Under 40 Fellowship was introduced, offering grants of S$5,000 to support community projects spearheaded by young party members. These initiatives aim to empower the next generation of leaders within the PAP and encourage active participation in shaping the country’s future.
