The Philippine government expressed its desire for an impartial impeachment trial for Vice President Sara Duterte, following recent shifts in the Senate’s leadership. On Tuesday, Malacañang emphasized the importance of fairness in the proceedings, amid growing public scrutiny.
According to Palace Press Officer Claire Castro, the impeachment case is now under the Senate’s jurisdiction. She reassured that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. would remain uninvolved, underscoring the separation of powers in handling such matters.
During a press briefing, Castro stated, “Hopefully, if this goes to the Senate, our senators will be fair judges, because this is for the people.” Her comments highlighted the expectation for the Senate to act justly in their role as arbiters of the case.
Castro also clarified that the involvement of the House of Representatives concluded with their decision to move the case forward. “So, the House of Representatives has spoken and it is their job and it is not part of the mandate of the President,” she added, further distinguishing the legislative process from presidential influence.
