Singapore and Luxembourg are set to broaden their collaboration in cutting-edge fields such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and space and satellite communications, as both nations look to deepen their well-established partnership. Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong pointed out that the two countries face similar hurdles as small states with constrained domestic markets and limited natural resources. He emphasized that both nations have leveraged their openness and global networks to emerge as significant financial and business centers serving larger regional markets.
Highlighting the robust economic connections between the two, Wong noted that Luxembourg stands as the largest European Union investor in Singapore, while Singapore ranks as Luxembourg’s second-largest investment destination within the EU. The partnership not only focuses on economic ties but also on strengthening the relationship between ASEAN and the European Union. According to Wong, both Singapore and Luxembourg advocate for regional integration and are committed to maintaining an open, rules-based international order.
During his official visit to Singapore from September 6 to 8, Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden also engaged in discussions with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Their talks delved into geopolitical developments and explored avenues for the two countries to foster stability, predictability, and the rule of law. This visit is significant as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Luxembourg.
In a further sign of deepening bilateral ties, Luxembourg has inaugurated its first resident embassy in Singapore, marking a substantial commitment to enhancing its engagement with both Singapore and the broader region. Prime Minister Frieden is also slated to deliver the 48th Singapore Lecture on September 8, where he will address Europe’s evolving role and autonomy in the changing global landscape.
