In a recent parliamentary session on September 8, Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong underscored the necessity of competitive salaries for political leaders to ensure effective governance. He emphasized that the performance of strong institutions hinges on leadership by individuals who possess integrity, competence, and sound judgment. According to Wong, ministers need to be adept at setting priorities, making strategic decisions, and handling tough choices responsibly.

Wong argued that while public service should be viewed as a calling, adequate remuneration is crucial to attract talented individuals to political careers. He expressed concern that excessive personal and financial sacrifices might deter capable people from pursuing roles in politics. The government, acknowledging this, has accepted the suggestions from a long-overdue review of salaries for political office holders and Members of Parliament. Wong asserted that periodic adjustments are required to ensure that the compensation for political leaders remains aligned with evolving realities.

Highlighting the risks of inadequate political leadership, Wong warned that it could have a detrimental impact on the civil service. He pointed out that skilled public officers need leaders they can respect and learn from, and that sustained poor leadership might lead to talented officials departing or becoming less inclined to tackle challenging responsibilities.

While emphasizing the fundamental role of character in selecting ministers, Wong stated that integrity, values, and dedication to public service are paramount. He made it clear that individuals lacking these traits should not be appointed to ministerial positions, irrespective of their skills. Nonetheless, he also noted that integrity alone does not suffice; ministers must possess strong judgment, competence, and leadership abilities to effectively manage the complexities of government.
