After nearly 18 hours of negotiations in Switzerland, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and U.S. Vice President JD Vance expressed satisfaction with the progress made. Both nations, along with mediators from Qatar and Pakistan, have agreed that technical teams will continue to work on the finer details of implementation and on a framework for a broader agreement anticipated in the coming two months. A key element of these discussions is Iran’s decision to allow IAEA inspectors to recommence monitoring activities. Ongoing negotiations will determine the extent of inspections and access to nuclear facilities that were previously damaged in attacks.
The agreement also includes economic measures designed to alleviate pressure on Iran’s economy. The U.S. is preparing a temporary waiver to enable the resumption of Iranian oil and petrochemical exports, and discussions are ongoing about the release of Iranian assets that have been frozen overseas. Iranian officials are optimistic that these steps could contribute to stabilizing the economy and curbing inflation.
Moreover, the deal has led to the establishment of a coordination mechanism among Washington, Tehran, and Beirut, aimed at supporting efforts towards a lasting ceasefire in Lebanon. This mechanism is intended to reduce the risk of escalation and enhance communication during times of heightened tension.
Despite these advancements, officials admit that considerable challenges remain, particularly concerning regional security issues and the enforcement of ceasefire commitments. Nevertheless, both sides have described the talks as constructive and have expressed optimism that continued diplomatic efforts could pave the way for a comprehensive long-term agreement.
