Singapore and Germany are set to enhance their collaboration in the fields of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, as part of an updated strategic partnership roadmap. This agreement emerged following a meeting between Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on October 27. The renewed work plan builds upon a previous roadmap established in 2024, targeting key areas such as industrial AI, the digital economy, advanced manufacturing, and other emerging technologies.
Both leaders underscored the transformative potential of AI in revolutionizing industries, improving productivity, and offering new opportunities for businesses and workers. The two nations aim to broaden the application of industrial AI across various sectors, including manufacturing, robotics, and logistics. A significant focus will also be placed on ensuring AI safety and security, emphasizing responsible, trustworthy, and human-centered technology deployment.
In addition to AI, the partnership will bolster research collaborations under the Singapore-Germany Year of Innovation. Joint projects are anticipated to span several fields, including semiconductors, quantum technology, space, green technologies, and advanced manufacturing. This initiative aims to leverage existing academic and research partnerships to accelerate innovation and technological advancements.
Beyond technological advancements, Singapore and Germany are committed to strengthening economic ties between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the European Union. Singapore plans to collaborate with Germany during its 2027 ASEAN chairmanship to advance regional cooperation, which includes pursuing an ASEAN-EU free trade agreement and enhancing digital system integration.
The discussions also highlighted issues of regional energy connectivity and the protection of critical underwater infrastructure, such as subsea cables and pipelines. Germany’s support for Singapore’s voluntary initiative on underwater infrastructure protection reflects both countries’ dedication to international law, multilateral cooperation, and a rules-based international order.
