Prime Minister Lawrence Wong of Singapore is set to visit Timor-Leste from July 2 to 3, marking the first official visit by a Singaporean prime minister to this Southeast Asian country. During his visit, PM Wong is scheduled to engage in high-level discussions with Timor-Leste’s President José Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão. In recognition of Singapore’s contributions to the nation’s development and its integration into ASEAN, Wong will be honored with the Order of Timor-Leste (Grand Collar), the highest accolade the country bestows.
The visit is aimed at bolstering bilateral ties through the establishment of a new framework for regular consultations. Both nations are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding to foster collaboration in key areas like governance, capacity building, and regional engagement. Singapore has been a steadfast partner in Timor-Leste’s development since its early post-independence era, providing training programs, technical assistance, and even peacekeeping efforts. This partnership has been further solidified since Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN as its newest member.
In addition to formal meetings, PM Wong will attend a state banquet and connect with Singaporeans residing in Timor-Leste. The Singapore delegation accompanying him includes senior ministers and officials, while Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong will assume the role of acting prime minister during Wong’s absence. This visit is anticipated to further solidify diplomatic relations and aid in Timor-Leste’s ongoing integration into regional institutions.
Singapore’s support for Timor-Leste has been multifaceted, contributing significantly to the country’s governance and technical capacities. As Timor-Leste continues to navigate its path within ASEAN, the strengthening of ties with Singapore is seen as a crucial step. The discussions during this visit will likely pave the way for enhanced cooperation that benefits both nations and reinforces regional stability and development.
