In a significant boost to bilateral relations, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. wrapped up a four-day official visit to Canada, securing $2.5 billion in investment commitments from prominent Canadian firms. This development marks a strengthening of economic ties between the Philippines and Canada, as leaders from both nations aim to elevate their relationship to a strategic partnership. Discussions between President Marcos and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney centered around expanding collaboration in areas such as trade, security, energy, technology, and investment.

Key meetings were held with companies such as B2Gold, OceanaGold, TELUS, and NQX, focusing on sectors like mining, critical minerals, energy, information technology, business process management (IT-BPM), and the digital economy. These discussions resulted in commitments that underscore the potential for increased economic cooperation between the two countries. President Marcos emphasized the significance of these investments in highlighting the need for a free trade agreement between the Philippines and Canada, which he believes would further enhance economic collaboration.

Moreover, the two nations explored the establishment of artificial intelligence hubs and training centers aimed at developing AI skills for the global workforce. This initiative is part of a broader effort to foster technological advancements and workforce readiness in both countries, aligning with global trends in digital transformation.

As part of the visit, Canada pledged an initial C$2 million to support infrastructure, supply chain, and clean energy projects under the Luzon Economic Corridor. This commitment reflects Canada’s interest in contributing to sustainable development initiatives in the Philippines. Furthermore, both countries signed a Joint Declaration of Intent on Energy and Natural Resources Cooperation, signaling a mutual desire to enhance collaboration in these vital sectors.

Additionally, the two nations agreed to reinforce their defense and security cooperation through existing bilateral agreements, underscoring a shared commitment to regional stability and security.
