You may soon find yourself using the pause button on Instagram Reels a lot less. The platform is experimenting with a new Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode that allows videos to play continuously in a floating window, even when you’re using other apps.
This feature, currently being tested with a small user base, is designed for a world where everyone is multitasking. A Reel will no longer stop just because you received a message you need to answer. Instead, it will minimize and follow you to your messaging app, your browser, or your home screen, allowing for uninterrupted consumption of content.
This is a massive development for creators, as it helps solve the persistent problem of viewer drop-off. If viewers can stay engaged with a video while handling minor interruptions, watch times are likely to soar. Instagram has confirmed that a simple opt-out option will be included for those who prefer the current viewing method.
This test coincides with another major user-centric upgrade: the official debut of an Instagram app for the iPad. This new app delivers a much-needed, optimized experience for tablet users, making the platform more enjoyable and accessible on larger screens.
