Authorities have intercepted a smuggling attempt involving P31.6 million worth of rare agarwood at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), highlighting ongoing efforts to combat the illegal wildlife trade and protect the country’s natural resources.
The high-value wood, often used in perfumes, traditional medicine, and luxury products, was discovered during a July 30 inspection in a warehouse in Pasay City. The shipment was falsely declared as “Mahogany Wood Hand Carving Design” and “Pack of Dried Sibukaw Woodstick” in an apparent attempt to disguise its true nature.
The illegal export violates multiple environmental and customs regulations, including laws that safeguard endangered species and restrict unlicensed trade in protected forest products. The agarwood was subsequently turned over to environmental authorities for proper handling and disposal.
Officials reiterated their commitment to safeguarding biodiversity, vowing continued vigilance against those who exploit the country’s rare and endangered resources. They emphasized the importance of border security in fighting environmental crimes and preserving the Philippines’ natural heritage.
